London Insight / Sanghaseva service retreat at The Khuphuka Project,
South Africa, 03. April to 17. April 2010
In a unique project London Insight will be combining with Sanghaseva to run a retreat in South Africa.We will be working with the Khuphuka Project which was co-founded by the Insight Meditation teachers, Kittisaro and Thanissara, who are based in South Africa.
The Khuphuka Project is an HIV/ AIDS community care and support programme serving rural communities that face huge problems including HIV infection rates of around 40%, high levels of unemployment, and many orphans and children ‘at risk’. Many families in these areas live close to starvation. The Khuphuka Project operates in the uMqatsheni, Kwatitela and Kwathunzi areas of the Kwa Sani municipality, KwaZulu-Natal. Our intention during the retreat will be to provide practical support to the Khuphuka Project in whatever way is appropriate to their needs and our capabilities at the time. As the Project is still in its infancy [it started in February 2009], we cannot yet specify exactly what kind of work we will be doing; more details will be available nearer the time. As with our 2008 Woza Moya retreat, there may be some physically demanding work involved, but we will try to ensure that there is appropriate work for the range of capacities of those attending the retreat.
Although our work will take place within the rural community where the Khuphuka Project operates, we will be staying at the nearby Dharmagiri Hermitage, founded by Kittisaro and Thanissara – which nestles in the spectacular Southern Drakensberg mountains.
Our days together will be framed by meditation and time for reflection and discussion at the Hermitage, and the two weeks will include a weekend of more intensive meditation practice.
